I’m going to give you an answer that’s probably a little different than what you were hoping for, but I think in the long run it will serve you a little better. You’re right there is a ton of slang in rap. I could talk about how I’ve got stacks in the crib or that dimes like my whip, but ultimately I don’t think a comprehensive list of slang is going to serve you very well. The best rap comes out of expressing yourself in a way that’s genuine to you. I’m not sure where you’re from, but if you’re not familiar with certain types of slang, it probably won’t sound right when if you try to adopt the wording. Just because some of the more established rappers speak in a certain way doesn’t mean you have to. This is similar to a concern a lot of new rappers have about using the braggadocio style. You don’t have to talk about how much money you make or how cool you are. Tap into your unique stories and individuality and create something based on what you’ve experienced. If you have your own set of slang that you naturally use, use that. Your first few fans will probably be people near you geographically, so it’s likely they’ll know what the slang means. If they don’t, they can also look it up. O Now if you’re listening to music and don’t know what they’re saying, by all means look it up. It’s super easy to type a word into urban dictionary and figure out what’s going on. I personally don’t think it’s relevant to know all that slang though. Speak and write in the ways that come naturally to you. When it comes to vocabulary, the goal is to communicate clearly, the specific words you use don’t matter as much. The main reason I recommend reading a lot and expanding your vocabulary is so that you can say what you mean AND have options. This is part of the reason slang gets used so much. Knowing more slangs opens up more opportunities to rhyme as you can swap out synonyms. The downside is, a lot of time slang is pretty crude. So, if you’re looking to make a more conscious style, it may not serve you as well. All that being said, if you really want to learn the slang and learn it well, you’ll need to engulf yourself in materials where it’s common. Join some rap boards online. Talk to people. Listen to the music. Do research. Personally, I’d rather work on my craft. That’s all for this video, feel free to ask questions in the comment box below. In this brief clip from Rico Recklezz's interview with VladTV, the animated Chicago MC breaks down Windy City slang. Vlad learns the meanings of the words and phrases, "Foe nem," "therm," "dad," and, "merch." Rico then explains that "thot" is a term that originated in Chicago, even though cities like Atlanta and New York tried to claim it. Rico also entertains Vlad with his attempts at New York and Atlanta accents. Watch above.

So, every verse is usually 16 bars. And when you are writing your song, you may want to double check to make sure that it's 16 bars. And so the way that you measure that is what we call counting bars. So, this is the way that you count a bar. You go one, two, three, four. Two, two, three, four. Three, two, three, four. And so on. And that is the way that you would count bars. And, again, every bar is four measures. Alright. Every bar is four measures. So you go and count 16 bars, and that is how you structure one verse. And, remember, every verse is made up of 16 bars.
