5 harmful effects of excessive video gaming

5 harmful effects of excessive video gaming

5 Most harmful effects of excessive video gaming Today More than 1.2 billion people are playing video games worldwide, and sales of games are growing. This popular form of media has both positive and negative effects on children. But playing video games too much, that can be a bad thing. Video game addiction can be as problematic as gambling. So, let’s dig into the harms of going into the deep end of video gaming. Obesity Scientists claim that video games make teenagers hungry and more likely to become obese. Over 45% of America’s 12 - 17 year olds spent more than two hours per day glued to a screen, and more than 1 in 7 children are overweight. Because video games are nothing but kicking back on the couch and punching buttons. And definitely sitting around for hours on end with minimal movement can make you more susceptible to health issues associated with obesity. The best approach is to mix in a little exercise and healthy snacks every few levels. Computer Vision Syndrome Most video games require lengthy involvement to finish any particular game, forcing the player to stay focused on the screen during playtime, and it is not great for your eyes. Prolonged bouts of video gaming can also cause symptoms very similar to Computer Vision Syndrome, or CVS. And also, it can cause a wide range of problems, most commonly led by eye strain and eye pain. To help prevent eye strain, make sure you have proper lighting to reduce glare, take frequent breaks to rest your eyes and blink often. You might miss that power up, but your eyes will thank you for it. Backaches Backaches are a common physical symptom of gaming addiction because most gamers stay seated in the same position for hours. The lack of movement causes stiffness and soreness, but could deteriorate into chronic back problems. So, if you must play, at least fix your posture. Migraine Migraine headaches typically start in one spot and slowly spread, getting more painful as they progress. In severe cases, the pain can be so extreme that it causes the sufferer to vomit. Light and noise can cause excruciating pain. While there are countless triggers for migraines, people who play video games for extended periods of time are more prone to these headaches because of the intense concentration required while gaming, as well as the strain put on the eyes by staring at a bright screen. Aggressive Behaviour and Mental Problems According to a new review of research, violent video games are linked to more aggressive behaviours among players. Children are at risk of becoming more impulsive, socially awkward, and more likely to become addicted to gaming over time. They are frustrated by resistance to accept studies that link violence to the video games as well as the lack of action on the issue. Kids who play violent games also tend to have more aggressive fantasies and engage in more aggressive behaviours. Enjoy and stay connected with us!! Our community has about 50,000 members across 85 countries. Growing up I was a fairly normal Canadian kid. I went to school, played hockey, and then I would go home and play video games. That all changed in the 8th grade when I began to experience a lot of bullying, leading me to drop out of high school. For the next few years I was living in my parents basement playing video games up to 16 hours a day, depressed, and struggling with anxiety. Eventually it got so bad I wrote a suicide note, and that's the night when I realized I needed to make a change. Fast forward a few years later and after a bad relapse where I binge gamed for five months straight, I quit and this time, decided to share my story online about my experience. After hearing from thousands of others who shared that they too struggled, I had the honor giving a TEDx talk. That led to me hearing from even more people. I knew I needed to do something more, so in 2015 I launched Game Quitters with the intention of creating the best platform possible to help anyone in the world who wanted help with their video game addiction. Today my life is surreal. I travel all over the world speaking and sharing about the work I do, I was recently named one of Canada's Top 150 Leaders in Mental Health, and had a paper published in Psychiatry Research. My story has been featured in BBC, Forbes, ABC, Vice, CBC, CTV, and so many others... but more importantly, I'm happy. I live my life to the fullest and do my best to make every day count. It's a stark contrast compared to the days I was playing video games. And I just try to be an example of what's possible for you too, if you commit to realizing your full potential. I'm here because I love to help, so if you have any questions leave a comment and I'd be happy to support you.
