Step 1: Start with easy clues across Solve the easy clues first, starting with number one and moving 'across.' Step 2: Now move down Begin with number one in the 'down' category and answer all you can in the first pass. Step 3: Connect intersecting words Progressing from the puzzle's top left, fill in words that intersect with already completed answers. Tip Words that contain a lot of vowels are used frequently in crossword puzzles. Step 4: Take breaks Take a break periodically. If you try too hard, the obvious can seem unintelligible. When you return to the puzzle, note how quickly some answers occur to you. Step 5: Check for anagrams Check for anagrams in clues. Anagrams show up through descriptive terms or names that must be rearranged to divine the intended answer. Step 6: Use the puzzle theme Use words associated with the title of the puzzle. Tip Work with a friend – sometimes two heads are better than one when solving a crossword puzzle. Step 7: Fill in the rest Continue filling in answers, moving left to right and top to bottom. Step 8: Practice and get better Practice crosswords to get better. The more puzzles you do, the more familiar you'll be with standard puzzle clues and answers. Did You Know? People who work on crossword puzzles more than four times a week may be less likely to get Alzheimer’s disease.

In 1913, the first published crossword puzzle was created by English journalist Arthur Wynne for the New York World newspaper.
Crosswords are one of the world's most popular word games, but how did they get invented? Tune in to learn how hard-working newspaper employee Arthur Wynne came up with the crossword puzzle. Stuff of Genius tells the story behind everyday inventions. From the bikini to super wheat and everything in between. Viewers will learn the stories of unsung inventor heroes and their trials, tribulations and successes. - Behold…the crossword puzzle. But where did it come from? Meet Arthur Wynne, born in England in 1871. Although Arthur was born across the Atlantic, he moved to the US by the time he was 19 and eventually settled in New York City, where he worked for the New York World. In 1913, Arthur’s editor asked him to make a new feature for the newspaper’s Sunday “Fun” section. As he brainstormed for new games and puzzles, Arthur remembered a game from his childhood. In this earlier game, called “Magic Squares,” players arranged groups of words so that they could be read the same way across and down. This puzzle would probably have been enough to please the editor, but Arthur took it a step further, adding more complicated squares and giving readers clues to the correct words -- rather than the words themselves. Today we call these puzzles crosswords, but the New York World originally called them “mental exercises.” Arthur published his first crossword in 1913. It was shaped like a diamond, and the clues were pretty easy. It was a huge success, and other papers quickly followed suit with similar puzzles. By 1930 the London Times produced their first crossword puzzle, and they went on to create the standards that define crosswords today.

This video shows you how to make Ferromagnetic slime from borax and PVA (Elmer's) glue. Get the supplies here:http://www.beardedscienceguy.com/magnetic-slime-materials 1. Place 120 ml (½ cup) of PVA glue (Elmer’s School Glue) in a 500 ml container. 2. Add 120 ml (½ cup) of warm water to the same container. 3. Sir this solution until it is mixed to an even consistency and set this solution to the side to be used in a later step. This is solution number 1. 4. In a second 500 ml container add 240 ml (1 cup) of warm water. 5. Add 5 ml (1 tsp) of borax powder to the container and stir until the borax powder is completely dissolved. This is solution number 2 6. Slowly add small amounts (10 drops at a time) of the borax mixture (solution 2) to the glue mixture (solution 1) until it thickens into slime. Make sure to continue stirring the glue mixture (solution 1) as you are adding the borax mixture (solution 2). Add about ten drops and then stir these drop into the mixture completely before adding ten more drops. Stop once the mixture has turned into a slime consistency. Note: If too much borax solution is added the slime will be very stiff and not very slimey, so make sure to add solution 2 slowly and be careful not to add too much. If you end up adding too much borax solution and your slime ends up being stiff and rigid make more glue and water solution and fold the slime in this solution until it loosens and becomes slimy (This can take anywhere from five minutes to two hours depending on how much borax solution was added so it is sometimes easier to start over if your slime is extremely hard and thick.) 7. Take your slime and fold it 20-30 times to make sure all the ingredients and mixed well. 8. Add 60 - 160 grams (2 Tbsp) of iron filings to the slime and mix it together by folding the slime 10-20 times. 9. Now you can use a neodymium magnet to manipulate the slime. The iron filings are attracted to the neodymium magnet and because they are mixed into the slime the entire blob can be manipulated via a strong magnetic field. Note: As you play with your slime water will evaporate and need to be replace by dipping the slime in warm water and then folding the water on the surface of the slime into the slime itself.
