Up till now we've learned how to install Ubuntu server 14 on Windows 8.1 and we we'll continue today with the next tasks: - download and install Putty installer; - Generate ssh-key using PuttyGen or Putty Generator and - auto log in to the virtual machine using Pageant or Putty Agent; Let's start by downloading "Putty installer". Open your browser and navigate to the link shown on your screen: scroll down a bit and click "putty-0.63-installer.exe". Save the file and once the download is finished run the installer. Click "Next", "Next", "Next", "Next", "Install", uncheck "View readme.txt" and "Finish". Let's have our virtual machine opened. I'll show you another way to do it. Open Oracle Virtual Box, and right click your "Ubuntu server 14" and select "Create shortcut on Desktop". Let's close Oracle Virtual box as we no longer need it. Now we can open our virtual machine each time we want directly from the Desktop. Let's do that now and let's minimize it. Now let's open "PuttyGen" and generate our first SSH Key on Windows. Press the "Start" button and type "PuttyGen". Select PuttyGen and press "Enter". Once "PuttyGen" is opened press the "Generate" button. Then you have to move your mouse in the empty area randomly until your key is generated. After this append your name or email to the Key comment. This step is optional but I highly recommend it. When you are working in teams it's easyer for a system administrator to manage access based on SSH Keys. Protect your SSH key with a password by filling in the "Key passphrase" field. Now we have to save it in different formats. Firstly, we'll start by pressing the "Save public key" button, navigate to your conveninent .ssh folder and save it as "my-first-ssh-key.pub". Secondly, we'll press the "Save private key" button and save it as "my-first-ssh-key.ppk". And lastly, since some software require it in OpenSSH format, click on the "Conversions" menu located at the top of the window and select "Export OpenSSH key", then save it as "my-first-ssh-key.openssh" and we are done with this part. Let's close PuttyGen for now. There are more ways to auto log in with your ssk key using Putty. The one that I use and recommend it to you is to manage the requests for your SSH keys with Pageant. Let's do that now. Press the "Start" button and type "Pageant", then press "Enter" to open it. Pageant will start in your systray. If you don't see it, click the small triangle icon in the systray to expand it, then locate and right click Pageant. Select "Add key" and navigate to the path where you have saved your SSH Key and double click it. Input your passphrase. This step is optional but I'll teach you a nice trick to make thins funnier and a bit more personal. Let's use our development environment as our "first name.com", in my case it will be "marian.com". In order to do this press the "Start" button, type in "notepad", right click on "notepad" and select "Run as administrator". If "User Account Control" pops up choose "Yes". Then from the top menu choose "File - Open" then type in the path shown on your screen: "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and hit "Enter" key. Type in "127.0.0.1 marian.com" your first name followed by ".com" and hit "Enter" to push the comments line down. Save the file and close Notepad. Now when you will make any request to "marian.com" it will point to your machine. Now let's open Putty and configure our connection. Hit the "Start" key, type "Putty" and press "Enter". Now I would recommend you to right click Putty icon in the task bar and select "Pin this program to taskbar". In the hostname field we'll type "marian.com" and in the "Saved sessions" we'll do the same. For port we'll leave 22 as we've configured Virtual box, but if you use other custom port to connect through SSH, please don't forget to update it. PuTTY is communication software available freely over the internet, which uses several network protocols including SSH. Logging in using PuTTY SSH keys allows the only those people who have a valid key pair, which further prevents any threat of unwanted hacking of data. Step#1: Configuring PuTTY terminal First of all, open up the PuTTY terminal. Over here, enter the host for the server which you want to connect to. Let's enter an IP address of one of the host here and leave the port to default. Step#2: Authorization With that done, let's move to the SSH option in the category portion, expand it and then click on the "Authorization" option. Here, browse for the Key File which will be automatically made when configuring this connection. Locate the file and then click on the OK button. Step#3: Connecting to SSH Server Once you are done with that, a terminal will open up and will prompt you for the username. Specify the username and hit enter. After that, the connection would be established completely, enabling you to perform any tasks depending upon the permissions set by the administrator. Step#4: Generate SSH Key Now let's see how we can generate the SSH keys. For that, open up the Putty key generator. Over here, click on the Generate button next to the "Generate a public/private Key pair" option, in the Actions section. Step#5: Encrypting and saving SSH Key You can also change the type of parameters according to your requirements, and even change the bits over here. When prompted to generate some randomness, keep moving the cursor over the blank screen over here. This step is basically used by the application for securing the encryption. Random movements can be hard to re-generate and the sequence produced by your movements is calculated by the application. Once the process completes, it will show you the encryption key in the preview area. To save this key, click on the Save Private Key button and it will prompt you with a notification asking you whether you want to create a key without a passphrase. Hit yes to ignore it for now and then specify the location for the file. Your PuTTY SSH key file would be saved with the ".ppk" extension. And that pretty much covers the basics of using PuTTY with SSH keys in windows.
Creating and using SSH keys As the third video in this series on making SSH access to a CentOS Linux server more secure, this tutorial will show you: How to Create and Use SSH Keys with PuTTY With this video tutorial, you will learn how to use SSH keys to connect to a CentOS server from a Windows PC, using the PuTTY SSH client and PuTTYgen utilities. You can download PuTTY and the PuTTYgen utilities from the URL displayed in this video and from the link in the text below. To generate a set of RSA keys, launch the PuTTYgen utility. RSA is a cryptosystem for public-key encryption. On the PuTTYgen Key Generator screen, make sure the "SSH-2 RSA" option is selected, then click the “Generate” button, and move your mouse around the area, as instructed on the screen. This will generate some randomness and will take a few seconds to complete, as seen in the progress bar. Once complete, you will see a generated public/private key pair. In the "Key comment:" field you can enter any comment you like to help you identify the generated key pair. Click the "Save public key," choose location to save it, name the file as you like and click "Save." On the PuTTY Key Generator screen, click the "Save private key" On the "PuTTYgen Warning" window, click "Yes." Choose the location to save the file, name the file as you like, and click "Save." The location of the files can be the same, but ensure that only you have access to it and that you do not lose the keys. Next, right click in the text field beneath, "Public key for pasting into OpenSSH authorized_keys file:" and choose "Select All." Right click again and choose "Copy." Now, you will save your copied public key log to the CentOS server. Open the terminal and at the command prompt type mkdir ~/.ssh and press Enter. Then, type chmod 0700 ~/.ssh and Enter. Next, type touch ~/.ssh/authorized_keys and Enter. Then, type chmod 0644 ~./ssh/authorized_keys and Enter. Now you will edit the authorized keys system file. At the prompt, type sudo vi ~./ssh/authorized_keys and press Enter to execute the editor. If prompted to enter sudo password type your user's password and press Enter. On the editor screen, press the Insert. key and right click your mouse to paste the copied public key. Press the Esc. key, type :w and press Enter to save the file. Type :q and press Enter to exit the editor. To configure the PuTTY profile in your Windows PC, open the PuTTY utility. In the "Host Name (or IP address)" field enter your server's IP In the "Port" field, enter the custom port configured during the “How to Change the Default SSH Port” tutorial. Make sure the "Connection type:" is SSH. In the "Category:" section on the left pane under “Connection,” choose "Data." In the "Auto-login username" field, enter the user name you created in the How to Create a New User tutorial. Go to the "Category:" section in the left pane and under “Connection,” expand "SSH." Under "SSH," highlight "Auth" to access the Options controlling SSH authentication screen. In the "Authentication parameters" section click the "Browse..." button and browse to the location where your private key file is stored. Choose it and click "Open." In the "Category:" section in the left pane, highlight "Session," and enter a chosen name for the profile in the "Saved Sessions" field and click “Save.” Choose the newly saved profile, and click "Open" to connect to your CentOS server using the SSH key pair.
