On Wednesday February 24, 2016 N6449P a Cessna 152 was on a "maintenance flight" when the pilot experienced an engine failure while on approach to land at KHWO Hollywood / North Perry Airport in Hollywood, FL just outside Ft. Lauderdale. The pilot crashed into the backyard of what appeared to be an unoccupied house (with a very dirty pool in the backyard), impacting a telephone pole with the left wing and coming to rest just past a fence breaking the nose gear on impact. It appears the pilot did exactly what he needed to do, FLY THE PLANE, all the way to the ground, and maintained sufficient airspeed to impact in a level attitude rather than stalling when trying to "stretch the glide" as many pilots will do under stress. The pilot was the only occupant on board and had only minor injuries.
These are tips about flying tailwheel aircraft that will help keep it pointed the right direction. Rule #1 Keep it on Centerline Rule #2 Stay off the brakes Rule #3 Fly it to parking Rule #4 Go Around! Rule #5 Taxi Slowly

Friends reflect on the lives of mesa plane crash victims Alan Ram and Krista Buchanan.
10/3/67 Morning News: (Start film) A well-known Roanoke Doctor and his flight instructor were killed in the crash of their light plane yesterday on a Botetourt County farm. (Take Film) The victims of the crash were identified as Dr. George W. Hurt, Junior, of 2919 Crystal Spring Avenue, Southwest, and his flight instructor, 47-year-old Charles Mock of 917 Whitney Avenue. A spokesman for a flight school operating out of Woodrum Airport said Mock was teaching Hurt to fly. The plane carshed in an alfalfa field belonging to J. A. Firebaugh who was harrowing a field when the plane appeared. Firebaugh, describing the planes approach, said the wheels and undercarriages snagged some power lines and flipped the aircraft nose-first into the ground. Firebaugh said the plane was flying low--less than 100 feet above ground--at the time of the accident. (more plane crash) 2. The plane, a two-place Cessna 150, struck the power lines running from an Appalachian Power substation to the Lone Star Cement Plant nearby. The two passengers were trapped in the wreckage for some time before rescuers could remove them. Botetourt County Sheriff Norman Sprinkle said Hurt was alive when he reached the site, but died while being removed from the gasoline-soaked wreckage. An investigative team from the Federal Aviation Administrarion office in Richmond was expected to arrive in Roanoke last night to probe the cause of the crash.
Audio from liveATC.net of 09/22/17 emergency landing of Mooney M20E (tail # N34BE) at Allen and Glenoaks in the city of Glendale. The pilot and passengers aboard the Mooney survived without serious injury. Nice job on the comms for both the pilot and controller, and bravo to the pilot for remembering to fly the airplane and getting down without harm to anyone. I edited the ATC audio down somewhat to edit out gaps and less relevant radio calls. Full audio can be found at liveatc.net (Sept 23rd, 430-500Z). MOONEY: I’m not sure...we may have just lost our engine... TOWER: Mooney 4BE roger...uh...say intentions. MOONEY: Gettin’ on the ground ASAP! TOWER: Mooney 4BE make straight in, RWY 26 MOONEY: Straight in, 26, 4BE. The controller starts diverting other traffic away from the emergency. TOWER: Mooney 4BE, say intentions. MOONEY: Coming straight in, 4BE. TOWER: Mooney 4BE make straight in, RWY 26, wind light and variable, RWY 26, clear to land MOONEY: Do I have you right in front of me, I think I do... TOWER: Affirmative, airport 12 o’clock, 5 miles. TOWER (to police): There are two Southwest 737’s going around, and traffic 5 miles east, Mooney, descending out of 1700 inbound with an engine out emergency. MOONEY: Uh, we’re gonna go for the street here, uh, sh*t, where we’re going. POLICE (I think): Vehicles on ground frequency? Mooney can not make it into the airport, he says he’s landing on a street, monitor local frequency and we’ll let you know what street he’s going to. TOWER: Do you have that Mooney in sight sir? POLICE HELICOPTER: He just went down on the ground. TOWER: Police 100, did it appear to be a safe landing sir? POLICE HELICOPTER: He did a cartwheel, he’s flat on the ground right now, it appears he missed the apartment, he’s in the street.
