Violence & Peace in Contemporary Art: Biola Art Symposium 2013. March 2, 2013. Lia Chavez is an internationally exhibited visual and performance artist who lives and works in New York City. Examining the co-existence of the gorgeous and grotesque, she focuses on themes of illumination, embodiment and becoming. Her practice incorporates a diverse range of media with an emphasis on performance-generated photography often done in collaboration with documentary filmmakers, choreographers, and other artists. Her work has been exhibited at the 52nd and 53rd Venice Biennale; The Armory Show, New York; 10th Istanbul Biennial; Frieze Art Fair, London; Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Atlanta; and Affirmation Arts, New York. Her forthcoming monograph, 1000 Rainbows, will be published in 2013. Chavez's most recent work, True Light, was a 90-day endurance performance in which she utilized her body, mind and spirit as an integrated living laboratory for investigating the phenomenon of artistic inspiration. It is the subject of a forthcoming documentary film.
