Witbank communities suffering because of abandoned coal mines

Witbank communities suffering because of abandoned coal mines

Matters of the environment have been thrust into the spotlight as world leaders including President Jacob Zuma gathered in New York for the UN climate change summit. Our own Morning Live Meteorologist Tsietsi Monare was among the professionals who formed part of the gathering which highlighted the need to balance economic development and environmental responsibility. That dichotomy is evident across the globe and South Africa is no exception. The growing demand for energy has sparked a debate among environmentalists, government and mining bosses on the true cost of coal! Ayanda-Allie Paine visited community members in Witbank, who say they're suffering because of abandoned coal mines.

Numsa Trade Union speaks on Environmental Health and Social Issues linked to Sasol's pollution

Messages from trade Unions during our Destruction of the Highveld: Burning Coal research trip Sasol smells and pollution create TB and constant colds in the secunda community. Sasol refuses to take responsibility of the health crisis its causing in workers and the community. Sasol doesn't hire enough people from eMbalenhle township, Secunda. And does more and more sub contracting. Contractors are not permitted to use Sasol's medical facilities and struggle when they fall ill as a result of the kind of work they do. In the future, Secunda will become a ghost town. We depend too much on sasol, we know capitalist is cruel, when the coal is finished, they will abandon this town and move to Mozambique or somewhere else with more coal. As communities we need to put our prejudices aside to fight common struggles.

Clear the Air: How Eskom's coal kills

Clear the Air: How Eskom's coal kills

Whilst most people benefit from Eskom's electricity in South Africa, this video shows how it's the health and lives of the people in the Highveld that are disproportionately suffering from the health impacts due to pollution from South Africa's energy supplier. To further exacerbate the problem, the Department of Environmental Affairs is considering an application from Eskom, the country's' biggest air polluter, to not comply with the country’s already weak air quality standards. This is in spite of recent research from the World Health Organisation that air pollution is responsible for 1 in 8 deaths globally. If granted, Eskom will emit even higher levels of pollution, severely impacting people's health.
