Cars waiting for the elderly to cross the street in SW China

Then a traffic policeman came over to give a helping hand. He carried the senior on his back to the other side of the road. SOUNDBITE: (English), Audrey Eu, Hong Kong legislator: "Our streets are very small, very crowded. Mainland cars will go to the busiest areas like all the shopping areas and we can't really afford it. And also the government has no planning for park and ride as well. So, we say: the government has to come clean, they have to, in fact, consult the public before they even start the first stage. Because once you start the first stage, once you say Hong Kong cars can go up, then the next stage almost follows inevitably. Because then the government is going to say well, reciprocity and so on, and mainland cars will come to Hong Kong." 13. Wide of protesters marching 14. Mid of protester Wong Choi-wan, holding a stop sign, reading: (Chinese) "self-drive tour scheme" 15. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese), Wong Choi-wan, 46 years old, Hong Kong resident: "When a car accident happens in Hong Kong, it causes probably two to three hours of traffic congestion. So, when the mainland cars come, it will further intensify the traffic congestion. Why can't the government do more research on this aspect before they decide to implement the scheme? It offends Hong Kong citizens." 16. Wide of protesters marching with a police motorbike driving alongside 17. Top shot of protesters marching STORYLINE: Several hundred people took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday to protest against a scheme to allow private vehicles to travel between Hong Kong and Guangdong, a southern province in China. The project, known as a "self-drive tour scheme", has angered citizens in Hong Kong because of concerns about air pollution, traffic congestion, and road safety. The initiative will be introduced over two phases. The first phase, which will be implemented in March, allows private vehicles in Hong Kong to enter Guangdong for a short stay of no longer than seven days. In the second phase, private vehicles from Guangdong will be permitted to travel to Hong Kong. Even though the timescale to implement the second phase remains unknown, Hong Kong citizens are concerned. Raymond Fung, who marched with his bicycle in the protest, said he is worried about he affect more cars will have on the air quality. "The cars from mainland use up fuel and release more pollutants. It further intensifies the air pollution," he said. Some protesters said that the plan will increase the problem of traffic congestion. "When a car accident happens in Hong Kong, it causes probably two to three hours traffic congestion. So, when the mainland cars come, it will further intensify the traffic congestion," said protester Wong Choi-wan.
