The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that millions of earthquakes occur every year, but only one of them will be a "great earthquake" — that is, one with a magnitude of 8.0 or above. Here are where all the "great earthquakes" since 1900 have struck. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Major Earthquakes Strike All Over The Globe Last 48 Hours It began with a 6.3 in New Zealand: “A strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake has hit 40 kilometers off the New Zealand town of Kaikoura, GeoNet reports. Witnesses reported feeling tremors as far as Auckland. The earthquake was clearly felt in the cities of Wellington and Christchurch. The quake centered in Nelson region at the depth of 80 kilometers, according to GeoNet.” Then a 5.5 hit off the coast of Northern California: “A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was reported Thursday evening 140 miles west of Eureka, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 6:34 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 6 miles. According to the USGS, the epicenter was 295 miles northwest of San Francisco.” Then a catastrophic 7.9 hits Nepal. At least hundreds are dead… “A powerful earthquake struck Nepal Saturday, leaving at least 688 people dead, as the violently shaking earth collapsed houses, leveled centuries-old temples and triggered avalanches in the Himalayas. It is the worst temblor to hit the nation in more than 80 years.” and they just keep coming, there is a swarm in Idaho at this very moment: “The Inland Northwest was rocked by two earthquakes on Thursday night, both which had epicenters in North Idaho.” So something is afoot! Maybe it ends with Nepal’s tragic quake, maybe it doesn’t. Volcano’s too are going nuts. The Earth is mad and rightfully so… Music credit: !) Why is the crust of the Earth shaking so violently all of a sudden? Over the past 28 days, there have been 14 major earthquakes globally. USGS: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ IRIS - SEISMIC MONITOR http://ds.iris.edu/seismon/ Scientists say there has been an above average number of significant earthquakes worldwide in less than one month period. It is important to keep in mind that a magnitude 8.0 earthquake would be many, many times larger than the earthquake that hit Indonesia yesterday. A devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Indonesia Wednesday which killed at least 102 people and 136 seriously injured, according to Indonesia's Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency. Large earthquakes are relatively common in Indonesia, which sits on the infamous Ring of Fire, a set of fault lines that circle the Pacific Basin. Wednesday's earthquake is Indonesia's second major temblor this year and the most severe yet. A simulation of the most likely scenario and effects for the next big earthquake in Southern California. The magnitude 7.8 scenario earthquake ruptures 186 miles (300 km) of the San Andreas fault from Bombay Beach at the edge of the Salton Sea in the south to Lake Hughes northwest of Palmdale in the north. The final slip (offset across the fault) ranges from 6-23 ft (2-7 m). The colors in the movies indicate the peak intensity of the shaking up to the current time at each location. This movie shows a view of southern California with the seismic waves radiating outward from the fault as the rupture propagates towards the northwest along the San Andreas fault. Although varying in intensity, at times the plume contains enough ash to be gray in color. The cloud is rising an estimated 3 to 4,000 feet above the ground, but altitudes are varying with pulses of emission. The ash cloud is drifting slowly northward from the Kilauea summit and ashfall may occur in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and Volcano Village. Communities downwind may receive ashfall and should take necessary precautions. Several magnitude 3 or stronger earthquakes occurred beneath the summit today. The earthquakes were at shallow depth and resulted in cracks in Highway 11 near the entrance to Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Some facilities within the National Park were damaged as well. The explosive eruption of 1924 at the Kilauea summit was also marked by hundreds of felt earthquakes as magma drained from the caldera. The National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement regarding ashfall, please see: http://www.prh.noaa.gov/hnl/ For information on the hazards of volcanic ash and how to prepare your home or business, please see: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanic_ash/ For information on volcanic ash, please see: https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanic_ash/ Kīlauea Lower East Rift Zone This afternoon, eruptive activity remained concentrated at fissure 17 but the spattering was decreasing in vigor. The advance of the flow has slowed significantly since yesterday afternoon; the flow remains nearly 2.5 km (1.5 mi) in length. Volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind of the fissures. Magma continues to be supplied to the lower East Rift Zone as indicated by the continued northwest displacement of a GPS monitoring station. Elevated earthquake activity continues, but earthquake locations have not moved farther downrift in the past couple of days. USGS/HVO continues to monitor the lower East Rift Zone activity 24/7 in coordination with Hawaii County Civil Defense, with geologists onsite to track ongoing and new fissure activity and the advance of lava flows.
