Watch more How to Set Up Internet videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/499697-How-to-Reset-a-Router-Internet-Setup Today I want to talk to you about resetting your routers. Routers are wonderful things, and they give all our computers access to the Internet, but sometimes they get slow or they just stop working altogether and in most cases the solution is resetting them. So there are a few ways to reset your routers. The first one is to simply unplug it. So every router is connected to the power so you can just take out the plug and wait a second and then put the plug in and that will reset it pretty effectively. Some routers have a switch on them, like this one, so I can actually just flip the switch to off and on and the router will reset itself. Another way is by using this rare and handy tool called a paper clip. You can just unfold it a little bit to get the sharp point out and sometimes there will be a little reset switch right here that I can just click and that will reset the router. Now the reason we have this reset switch, even though we can reset the router in other ways, is because sometimes we have to do something called a hard reset. The hard reset, what it will do is it will wipe out the memory of the router. It will clean up so it will go back to being the way it was when we first bought it from the store. The way we do a hard reset is by leaving the router connected and turned on, and then taking the clip, and putting it in there. Pushing the button down for ten seconds and that's it! Once we're done the router will reset itself and completely forget all of the settings you put into it. This is a really good trick in case you lose the password, or forget the settings, or don't know how to access your wireless network anymore or maybe a friend just gave you an old router and you don't want to have his settings on it, so you want to wipe it clean and kind of have a fresh start. Once you reset the router, because all the settings go back to the default state, it would be wise to first go to the manufacturer's website and download the manual so you can know the default username and password and IP address of the router so that after you reset it you will have access to it. So that's a little about how to reset your router.

You just got your first router, and that's basically what it looks like. It has all these little ports in the back, and I'll give you a little explanation of what they are. So it's really simple. There are basically two kinds of ports. One is called the LAN, and you would usually get multiple ones of that. So you will get, in this case, four. Usually it's four. Sometimes it's three. And these go to every computer that you have or every device that you want to connect to your network. You can also detect the devices wirelessly, of course, because this is a wireless router. But we'll get to that a little bit later. Right now the more important connection we're looking for is something called WAN, or sometimes it will say "Uplink" or even "Internet" on it. And what this port does is connect to the internet, basically. Your modem will go right here. So in this case I have a little cable modem right here, and I'm going to hook it up. So I'm going to connect this router to the modem using this little ethernet cable that I have here. So one side will go to here, and the other one will go to the modem. On the modem side, it will usually be a little simpler. You just have one connection, so where it fits, it goes. The next thing I want to do is unplug the modem from the electricity. Now this is sometimes not important, but most of the time, most modems need to be kind of reset before you can get them working with a new device. While it's sitting there unplugged, I can take another ethernet cable and hook it up to my computer. So I'm going to use one of the four LAN ports in the back. It doesn't really matter which one. They should all work. And I'm just going to put it in, and then I'm going to put the other side into my nifty little computer. So what is happening right now is basically the computer is talking to the router, and it's asking it for something called an IP address, which is kind of like a number that tells the computer, "This is who you are on my network." Now once it gives it an IP address, which it happened very, very fast and basically automatically, I'm going to use either the web browser or the CD that came with the router to set it up. And the setup will take us through the process of telling the router A, what kind of internet connection are we using. So if you're using a cable modem, most of the time it will be a completely automatic setup. You will just plug it in, and it will work. Or if you're using a DSL modem, sometimes you'll have to enter a user name and password for the router to know how to connect to the internet using the modem. the second thing you will set up that's very important is your wireless network. So you'll set up the name of your wireless network and the password that will protect your wireless network from, you know, nosy neighbors or people you don't want to go on your files. The last thing that I recommend setting up is the router password. Now the router password is different from the wireless password, because the wireless password just limits access to the internet for all the wireless devices. But the router passwords protect all the settings that are on the router. So for example, if you want to change the wireless password, or if you want to limit the way people connect to the internet or set up a firewall, all these things are done with the router password. And it's very important that the router password is different than the wireless password.

Watch more How to Set Up Internet videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/499699-How-to-Boost-WiFi-Internet-Setup So a lot of people ask me, "How do I get my Wi-Fi to work faster or to have more range?" And there are actually a few things you can do to increase the powere of your Wi-Fi or to boost it a little bit. The first thing I would do is really try to look for a better driver for your network card. You can't really do this on Macs, but on PCs if you go to the manufacturer of the laptop or whoever made your wireless adapter, you will find drivers there. And these drivers are updated every few months. Sometimes newer drivers can definitely give you more speed and more range. The other thing you can do is change the channel of your wireless network. So if you go to the setup page of your wireless router, you will see that every router has a channel that it broadcasts on. And if you live in an area that has a lot of wireless networks around, some of them might be using the same channel that you are. So it would be a good trick to go to the wireless setup page and try to change the channel to a different channel. You can experiment with that by just changing it and seeing if it gets any better, or you can use your phone to download an app that actually kind of scans the air around you and tells you which networks are using which channels exactly. Another thing you can do is use an access point. So if you have the energy to do it, you can actually wire an access point from your router to another place at the house, and you'll kind of get a second hotspot which will give you more range and connects you to the same network so you can share stuff between all your computers. Another idea, if you don't want to wire anything is to use range extender like this one. This range extender actually has two radio antennas in it, not just one, so it can use one of them to connect to the existing network, and then use the second one to create a new network that will connect to the existing network. Another thing you can do is get a better wireless adapter for your computer. Your computer might be old, or it might have been cheap, and they people who built it just put a crappy wireless adapter in it. So you can buy a better wireless adapter, like this one for example, that has newer standards, more speed, and more range. They come in all different shapes and forms, but I like this one because it's a USB adapter, and it's really easy to use. You can just plug it in right here to the USB port, and voila, we have a new wireless adapter that should be much faster and much better. Other than that, there's also upgrading the firmware. If you go to your router setup page, there's always an option to upgrade the software that runs on the router. You can find newer software on the website of the manufacturer, download it, and then install it on the router, and that usually fixes bugs, enhances speed, and makes the whole thing a lot more stable. And that's how you boost your network.
