The third-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster came with a choice of two tops: a manual soft top and a power retractable hardtop, or PRHT. Now, for 2017, joining the fourth-generation manual soft top is what's called the retractable fastback, or RF. Coincidentally, the fastback aspect is what is not retractable. Mazda’s consummate sports car adds a stylish retractable roof. The RF keeps the frisky driving attitude but looses the open sky feel of the soft top. For all the similarities shared by the Toyota 86 and Mazda MX-5 Miata, they aren’t exactly direct rivals. Sure, they have a lot in common — both are fun-to-drive two-doors featuring rear-wheel drive layouts and naturally aspirated engines — but their bodystyles have been enough to put the pair at opposite ends of the sports car spectrum. That all changes with the introduction of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, a car that, while fundamentally the same as the soft top before it, now benefits from a targa-like configuration that for the first time puts it in the same conversation as the Toyota 86. But is that enough to make the Miata a sure bet for sports car supremacy? To find out, we brought them to the track for an old-fashioned head-to-head comparison. On this episode of Ignition presented by Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com), Jonny Lieberman heads to Scotland to get his hands on the latest iteration of Mazda’s famed and legendary roadster, the Miata. Motor Trend, having much to do with the creation of the first generation of this car, was particularly excited about covering this new model, considering the last generation model debuted nearly 10 years ago. The new Miata, featuring a 2.0l engine outputting 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, aims to accomplish what made the original Miata such a good car, but is it actually better than the first, second, and third generation cars? Stay tuned while Jonny finds out.
