There's a Reason They're Called Life Jackets

There's a Reason They're Called Life Jackets

In Maryland, boating accidents have claimed the lives of four people thus far this year. According to the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP), it is the deadliest start to a boating season in more than six years. None of this year’s victims was wearing a life jacket. Last year, not one of the nine victims was wearing a life jacket. It only takes 60 seconds for an adult to drown and 20 seconds for a child to drown. Yet, in many cases, life jackets are stowed out of reach or are still in their original wrapping. Life jackets work only when you wear them. Col. Ken Ziegler Jr. of the NRP and Cdr. Sara Wallace of the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region spoke today on the topic of boating safety. Tomorrow is the opening of the striped bass fishing season, which will mean an increase in boat traffic when water temperatures remain dangerously low. NRP and its partner agencies are taking steps to increase safety awareness, provide expert assistance and raise the visibility of enforcement efforts.
