Midsize hybrid SUVs don't come much better equipped or priced than the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, which has been out for three generations. Is a semi-luxury SUV sometimes powered by electricity worth all your budget? We’ll say this: The Highlander Hybrid packs a lot more surprises than just fuel economy. Driven as this model is intended, the Highlander Hybrid delivers a seamless, utterly relaxing experience that’s 90 percent worthy of a Lexus RX. The regular model’s 3.5-liter V6 is detuned in favor of a fuel-efficient Atkinson combustion cycle, which drops horsepower from 270 to 231. But when combined with two electric motors, including one at the rear axle that qualifies the vehicle for all-wheel drive, the Hybrid delivers 280 combined horsepower that’s sufficient despite the extra weight of the nickel-metal hydride battery and electric motors. This is the 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited, the subject of today's unboxing video. I'm often asked by friends with families what's the best three-row crossover minivan alternative on the market that's also fuel efficient. This is the vehicle that immediately comes to mind every time. There's a lot to like here: V6 power paired with electric motors front and rear that produce a combined 280 hp. A six-speed CVT is standard. Along with a 3,500 lbs. towing capacity and a 28 mpg combined fuel economy, the Highlander Hybrid is a solid choice - if your budget allows. Is the hybrid version a better choice than the regular V6 version? That's just one of the many things I discuss in the video ahead. Toyota's Highlander is on the smaller end of the three-row crossover segment, but that's exactly what families seem to love about it. With seating for 8 in a pinch, excellent reliability and a heap of changes for 2017 the Highlander is a better value than ever before. In this refresh Toyota decided to drop a new V6 under the hood of hybrid and non-hybrid models along with a new 8-speed automatic borrowed from Lexus. Then they added in their latest active safety systems standard in all models including the base trim giving every Highlander in America adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking. The combination makes the Highlander not just teh reliable choice for a three-row crossover but one of the best values in America. 0-30 : 3 Seconds 0-60 : 6.9 Seconds 1/4 Mile : 15.5 Sec @ 90 MPH 60-0 Braking : 127 Feet More videos: http://goo.gl/Kj1FlI Best cars in 2016: http://goo.gl/3xAVJi Upcoming reviews: http://goo.gl/pLtP6U AOA on Facebook: http://goo.gl/a47Cu1 The Mountain Garden: http://goo.gl/icFWcd
